In the investigative department, there’s a mix-up with the air conditioning units. Somehow, the activation of certain indoor units affects the operation of others. We just came to check and rewrite the addressing of the indoor units on the outdoor one. Beyond that, it’s the manufacturer’s problem and their support service — there are clearly some issues with the firmware of the air conditioning unit, which has two outdoor units operating in a master-slave mode while 23 indoor units are running inside.
Upon entering, they handed out “Visitor” badges. I asked if they had “Suspect” badges as well. Meanwhile, I had already come up with a whole series of badges in my head, ranging from “Victim” to “Scapegoat.”
So we’ll be running around the rooms checking the installation addresses. Cool, right? Not only are we positioned above the entire police force, in the sense of being on the roof, but we’ll also be conducting inspections of the premises. It’s such a thrill to break into offices that should instill fear in those who enter them, but who don’t actually work there.
- Wow, they have an amazing photo lab… And all this gear for shooting in the “still life” genre… A few expensive light heads, backdrops, special coordinate mounts for those heads, and similar coordinate tripods… mmm… The space is about 70 square meters, complete with a projector and screen. Nearby, there are camera bags with cameras and lenses. Expensive equipment. And the bags are cool too. Not soft, but hard-shell like suitcases, with metal corners on the outside and soft compartments inside.
- Listening rooms. Everything is recorded, and then girls come in—who are quite attractive, by the way—and listen in. Who do they listen to? Those who have a court order. Will the person being listened to know that they are being monitored? Yes, but later. Along with all the recordings—they will be handed over to them. Each listener has a separate room so that the person being listened to can’t be heard, even through the headphones, by anyone who isn’t involved in the case. I went into each room and fiddled with the remote. In one of the rooms, a girl was listening to someone through headphones. I listened too—it was loud, but just casually. The conversation was about nothing in particular. The person was setting up a meeting.
- Detectives… Mohawk on the head? Cool. Tattoos? Yes. But mostly, it’s guys with the “retired military” type.
- Youth: they’re passionately discussing something in the photo lab. They’re tossing ideas around, brainstorming. A couple of guys and a couple of girls. They’re jotting down notes. Excitement!
- The walls around the photo lab are adorned with still lifes that illustrate the work of a forensic expert. Themes like “How fingerprints are taken” or “How evidence is photographed.” Created with love and well-placed lighting.
- Can I take a photo of your instructions? No. Okay, no problem, but why? Just because!
- In one of the rooms, three monkeys are hanging from the ceiling by their necks on ropes. What the…?
We checked the addresses. There’s no logic to it at all. It’s as if the addresses were assigned to the installations completely at random. Or maybe it was done so the enemy wouldn’t figure it out?
